Our "MJ"

Smiling woman holding a happy baby boy indoors.

Milton, lovingly known as “MJ,” was the kind of person whose presence could change the atmosphere of a room. He carried a light that people felt immediately. It showed in his smile, in his warmth, and in the way he made others feel seen. As a member of St. Stephen Church, MJ lived his faith in a quiet but powerful way, not only through what he believed, but through how he treated people. His kindness, compassion, and sincere love for others were not occasional traits. They were part of who he was every day.

From an early age, MJ had a love for sports that became one of the great joys of his life. He was a proud fan of the Louisville Cardinals, and that passion for competition and community stayed with him as he grew. He played T ball and football as a child, but basketball was the game that truly captured his heart. On the court, around the court, or cheering from the sidelines, MJ’s energy was unmistakable. Basketball was more than a pastime for him. It was a place of connection, excitement, and belonging. His involvement in the Dirt Bowl gave him another space to pour that love into the game, while building friendships and memories that would stay with those around him.

MJ was also a young man of remarkable dedication and responsibility. At just 15 years old, he got his first job and remained employed from that point forward, showing a level of work ethic and consistency that spoke volumes about his character. He understood the value of showing up, working hard, and taking life seriously. At the time of his untimely passing, he was employed at UPS, continuing the pattern of determination that had already become part of his identity.

His commitment to his future was just as clear in his education and aspirations. MJ was a proud graduate of Louisville Male High School, Class of 2023, a milestone that reflected his perseverance and promise. He continued to build on that foundation by completing the Louisville Urban League Builders Program in 2024, where he received his certification of completion. He had set his sights on becoming an electrician, and that goal reflected something important about him. He wanted a life that was stable, meaningful, and built with purpose. He was moving toward that future with intention.

Yet for all that he accomplished, what people remember most about MJ is who he was. He had a big, unforgettable smile that seemed to carry its own kind of warmth. He was goofy, joyful, and full of life. He had the rare ability to make people laugh, feel comfortable, and feel welcome. He never met a stranger, only friends he had not yet made. That gift was not accidental. It was rooted in how he was raised, with love at the center, and with the lesson that giving to others should come freely, without expectation. MJ did not just learn that value. He lived it.

His presence brought comfort. His laughter brought ease. His spirit brought light. To know MJ was to experience a kind of generosity that could not be manufactured. It came naturally to him. And though he is deeply missed each and every day, the imprint of his life remains. His legacy is still alive in the people he loved, the people who loved him, and the many lives made better by his kindness, his joy, and his open heart.
